I got this off the ASAP (Ankylosing Spondylitis Awareness Project) Facebook website. It is so relevant to what those with undiagnosed AS go through. Great information on that site so make sure you head over there!
FACT OR MYTH:
1.”You can’t have AS, you are HLA-B27 Negative.”
2. “You can’t have AS, you are a woman.”
3. “You can’t have AS, you are too young.”
4. “You can’t have AS, you don’t have any abnormal blood tests, like ESR or Sed Rate.”
5. “You can’t have AS, your SI joints aren’t fused.”
A lot of doctors will tell you at least one of these sometime during the initial time period when symptoms appear. My own doctor said “you can’t have AS you are a woman”, but once the blood test came back he did apologize, but that was a long time ago and there is no reason for a doctor to say any of the above statements in today’s day and age.
So if you feel that you have any of the symptoms of AS don’t take one doctors statement, if it’s one of the above, and believe him. Find another doctor, hell find several until you get the right diagnosis. I have heard about some people whose doctor wouldn’t even do the blood test or scans to even confirm a suspicion. So never take NO for an answer and always be your own advocate!
