A.J. Farshchian MD
AS in the News!
So on May 30th this article hit the feeds Ankylosing Spondylitis is Now Being Treated With Regenerative Medicine at The Center for Regenerative Medicine and since I have been very interested in stem cell therapy I was excited for more information and a local facility (meaning it is in the US). I read the article once, then I had to read it again and then again for a third time before it sunk in. This A.J. Farshchian MD, an orthopedic regenerative practitioner at the center for regenerative medicine, has just made me lose my faith in the medical community all because of one stupid sentence put out for publication. Mr. A.J. Farshchian, MD, stated and I quote “Ankylosing spondylitis is much more common in males than in females. (in fact I have not seen it in females as of yet) Most commonly striking patients in their 20s and 30s.”
So what the hell do I have, if this man has never actually seen a woman who presents with AS? First it’s a man’s disease and now women don’t really even get it? hum
I know he said he hasn’t actually “seen” a woman with this disease but why would he even mention it if he didn’t “believe” what he said?
This doctor, who is listed on Wikipedia, Twitter, Facebook yada..yada.. yada.. is obviously pretty good and he is the founder of the Center for Regenerative Medicine so you would think he would be a bit more versed on THIS medical issues since he works in alleviating arthritis. I have never come across one document that precludes women from this disease and now he writes this article and does just that. He is a orthopod who specializes in sports fitness/medicine and then got into stem cell treatment. What could he possibly know?
I know I am ranting but I get tired of hearing “you can’t have AS your not a man!” Now will I have to hear “you can’t have AS your a WOMAN, WOMEN don’t get AS!”
On the website The Faces of Ankylosing Spondylitis
there are more women than men. Is that because men don’t like to tell their stories, or think that their back hurts because they work too hard, or are they just stubborn and think it will just “go away”.
This article did upset me because this “Doctor” is delving in a field that could potentially help those of us with AS, and he could be taken seriously and further research could limit women’s involvement as test subjects. So yes I am upset and hope this Doc doesn’t preclude any women he may actually encounter when he begins his treatments.
NOTE: Ok so I just blew a fuse today, could be my body is not cooperating and pain meds are not working. Ah….. I think I recall something about the fact that you get a little grouchy when your in pain.
Reminder to self: don’t read articles written by idiots when in pain!
