Well for the past week I have had a flare up and have had to go back on my no starch diet. I had run out of my end fatigue drink mix but got restocked so should be good in a few days. I was looking at some YouTube videos people had posted about their AS and it was sad. I remember feeling hopeless, wondering what I had done to deserve this predicament, but I’m glad I had the foresight and the fight to continue to find some answers. Working in a healthcare setting I hear a lot the pain and sorrows of being ill. But what I have come to learn is that this happened to us for a reason. We are not special. We are no different from the rest of the people with illnesses, who I might say have it worse off. So what, I have a “back” problem, “stomach” problem, aches, pains. I can’t eat the foods that I like and my doctor isn’t God! Yep I did say that last part. You would not believe how many people listen to their doctors. Doctors are practicing, they have a degree that most people feels puts them in the God category, but I will be the first to tell you most of them have no clue to what AS really is. So back to the poor me attitude…. Get over it. Change your life, diet lifestyle. No pill will work for ever. Once you take ownership for your disease life gets much better. About 2 months ago I was in my chiropractors office he shares with another chiro. The doc was speaking to a patients wife about needing some X-rays and possibly a test to determine if he has AS. She went on to explain some more information and the wife pops up with “well maybe once his stomach feels better he can get up and do these stretches”. I snickered silently to myself and of course popped out with “I’m sure your husband has anklyosing spondylitis and because of that he has a little bacteria in his gut called klebsilliae which really doesn’t like starch. If he stops eating starch he should feel better in a week or so”. While saying this to the wife the chiro was looking it up on her computer and yells ” she’s right that could be his problem”. Well to make a long story short, the man had suffered with stomach pains for years, could not work, had every test under the sun completed and had no idea what was wrong with him. The wife called me and reported that her husband did in fact have AS and when she quit feeding him foods without starch he did in fact get better. He was so happy that he knew what was wrong with him and he wasn’t going out of his mind! So… Quit feeling sorry for yourself and do something about it. Something out there will work for you but you can’t quit trying to find it!
